Adding a Link to a Component of Your Blackboard 6 Course

Add a Link to a Component of Your Course

  1. If you want to students to connect to another part of their course, such as the Discussion Board to complete a discussion activity or to the Course Information section to review the course syllabus, enter the Control Panel and then the Assignments section. Then click on the name of the folder. When you enter the folder, click on the "Course Link" icon.

  2. Click on the "Browse" button under "Option 2" above and wait for the "Select a location" window, shown below, to appear on your screen. When it does, click on the radio button in front of the section of the course. You may need to click on the "+" in front of the section to expand the folder. You will then have to scroll down to locate the section inside the folder. For example, if you want students to link directly to the section of your course syllabus that shows your grading policies, you can click on the "+" in front of the Course Information section and then the plus inside the "syllabus" link. Then locate the "item" containing your grading policies. In the example below, the instructor has chosen the "Discussion Board" itself rather than a forum inside the discussion board so that the student can see the instructions for that discussion forum rather than going directly to the forum without the discussion forum name, description, and instructions.

  3. Then scroll down to option 3, check the course tracking and make item visible options. Then click the "Submit" button. If you have not already created the forum on the Discussion Board, you will need to click on the course link itself and then create a forum on the Discussion Board:

  4. After you click the "Submit" button, Blackboard will inform you that it has received the new content . You will then click the "OK" button to return to the Assignments section of the Control Panel:

  5. In the "Module One" folder in the Assignments section, you will need to click on the link to the Discussion Board, "DB1," in order to create the discussion forum so that students can participate in the discussion assignment. Note: You can create Discussion Board forums from the course itself when you click on the "Discussion Board" button or link on the navigation frame on the left isde of the screen in your course.

  6. After you click on "DBI" the course link to the Discussion Board, the Discussion Board itself will appear so that you can create the forum by clicking on the "Add Forum" button at the top left of the screen.

  7. After you click on the "Add Forum" button, you will enter a title for your discussion forum, describe the purpose of the forum, and select the options. Note: If you use the "smart text" option for displaying the text and the full Internet address and shown below, Blackboard will create the link to the Web site for you. The problem is that the Web site will then open inside your course. To make the link open in its own window, you will have to enter the HTML tag and link text. This following Web site explains how to create a link: Basic HTML for Enhancing Blackboard Documents

  8. Be sure to select the options for student participation in the forum and then click the Submit button to create the forum. Note: You can also block the participation of any member of the class by clicking the the person's name and then the "block" button:

  9. After you click the "Submit" button, the forum will appear on the Discussion Board. Note the number that appears in front of the forum title. Students will not see this number. It exists only for you to re-order the forums on the Discussion Board.
